Abstract
While drilling oil and gas wells a special fluid, referred to as “mud”, is pumped into the hole and forced to circulate as is reported schematically in Fig.1 (on the left). Mud selection and optimization can represent a key factor for the success of drilling operations and many types of mud have been developed. A “drill-in fluid” is a “low damaging mud” which can be used for drilling through productive formations (pay-zone), especially when long horizontal sections need to be drilled. The continuous growth in the drilling of horizontal wells during the last ten years has led to a parallel increase of interest in drill-in fluids development and implementation. Drill-in fluid characteristics are designed in order to meet both drilling and completion requirements. As drilling fluids, drill-in fluids must provide cuttings transport and suspension and contribute to hydraulic optimization, borehole stability and bit lubrication. As “completion fluids” they should be formulated in order to prevent undesirable chemical-physical interactions between the components of the drill-in fluids and reservoir rock that can damage the productivity of the formation (“formation damage”).
