Abstract
Microemulsions are particularly interesting for pharmaceutical applications as oil-in-water vesicular minicarriers for drug delivery systems, since they can be thermodynamically stable over a rather wide temperature range and easily prepared with no significant energy consumption. The combined stabilizing action of the surfactant and cosurfactant often leads to a very large interfacial area, with droplets smaller than 0.1 mm, and then, when the drug is dissolved in the very fine inner phase, it can be quickly released into the outer phase. Such microemulsions can be profitable used to prepare release systems destined to guest drugs sparingly soluble in water. Microemulsions can be profitably used for topical and transdermal administration, based on sustained or controlled drug release, in the place of ointments or creams, by adopting specific solutions for their application, since they are generally low viscosity Newtonian fluids and cannot be applied directly on the skin. The simplest solution to such a problem consists in adding a gelling agent suitable to impart proper rheological properties, without modifying significantly the other characteristics of the microemulsion. The present work concerns the analysis of the rheological effects produced by the addition of different amounts of Carbopolâ 940, a polymer widely used for topical applications, to an O/W microemulsion containing a lipophilic phase (21 wt%) and Cremophor RH40 as surfactant.

The XVIII edition of the SIR conference will be held in Villa Rosa, a recently renovated ancient Neapolitan villa in Capri Island (Naples, Italy), in September 12th-14th 2024. The event will be organised with the support of the Department of Chemical, Materials and Industrial Production Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II.
All those with an interest in rheology, in all its aspects, are invited to submit contributions.
Selected papers will be eligible for a special issue in Rheologica Acta.
