Abstract
Bitumen ageing is a complex process resulting in hardening of bitumens and embrittlement in service which greatly contribute at deteriorating paving applications. The specific ASTM tests evaluate bitumen age hardening by observing how viscosity, penetration and softening point change with ageing. Due to the ageing processes, a variation of both chemical composition and colloidal structure is observed1-4: the asphaltenes oxidation and the structuring processes interesting molecules and clusters are considered the principal factors responsible for such variations; the loss of volatile oily components is less important than both the previous ones.
This work evaluates the ageing properties of three vacuum residues, by means of dynamic rheological techniques. It was also investigated the influence of ageing on the flow properties of maltene fractions; although asphaltenes are traditionally considered as the principal responsible of ageing of bitumens5-7, is doubtless important to understand the whole product performances.
