Abstract
In textile printing the polysaccharides are widely used as thickening agents for the preparation of printing pastes. The incorporation of hydroxyl groups in polymer chains causes the formation of entangled molecules (clusters) in a concentrated aqueous solution, which results in a three-dimensional polymer network and increased viscosity.
During the printing process, i.e. the action of the squeegee on the printing screen, the printing paste is exposed to deformation forces which change its chemical structure consequently, and its rheological behaviour. The rheological properties of the printing paste are in close connection with the chemical structure of the polysaccharide polymer used, its concentration and physico - chemical interactions with other paste components. Some of the most important interactions in this process are those between the polysaccharide molecules and the molecules of additive. In case of an nonionic surfactant compound, which consists of a hydrophilic (ethylene oxide - EO) and a hydrophobic (hydrocarbon) chain, the molecules tend to accumulate at interfaces (between solution and solid phase) and build an oriented monomolecular film on this interface. This characteristic behaviour of the surfactant in a solution guarantees a greater possibility for practical application.
